Ronald Syme set the standard for writing on Tacitus in more ways than one: there's an obligation to coin startling phrases worthy of the man himself.
(the "iidem" was intentional, although nevertheless, I now think, less than optimal. I remember being told in high school writing class that one must only only ever use "ibidem" if it was exactly the same page in exactly the same source. On reflection (and with a little searching), this is a ridiculous limitation, but my instinct was there, and I went with the same (two) authors rather than the same place. So I should probably let this one stand as a testament to the ingeniousness produced by overly rigid primary instruction.
