So far, Theory may be my favorite class. I really like the professor: he's laid back, funny, and has a good style ("Are there any violas in here? Okay, good, then we won't have to worry about learning alto cleff.")
Latin? I'm scared. I'm really scared. I probably should be memorizing the first declension right now. He didn't say to for tomorrow, but about half the class has had some Latin before. So I really should.
Freshman Seminar I do not like. I am not overly fond of the reading (Confucius Analects) and I'm really confused by the assignments. I never know how/whether to take notes while I'm reading. I made a few, but they aren't extensive or very good. And she told us to do something like "find a part of the text that really speaks to you and make it your own." Which means…? Also, a rough draft of our first paper is due to her T.A. next Friday. I realize that I should be grateful for this, but the paper itself is scaring me. I gather that I ought to be writing about how the readings address the "big, philosophical questions" we'll be discussing in class, but I'm also supposed to evaluate and judge the authors. "Argue with them. Have a dialogue with them." I guess I just don't want to have a dialogue with Confucius.
Had my orchestra audition tonight. It's really hard to get in, because they have limited space. I probably didn't. The Haydn was pretty bad; my tone was weak, I squeaked, and I didn't vibrate at all. And I bombed the last sight-reading. We shall see.

you can be so smart...it's scary. Such a
combination of intelligence, creativity, power,
beauty, and magic is often intimidating to
those around you - who are also unlikely to
understand you. Arrogant, proud, overserious,
and sometimes a bit greedy or obsessed with
whatever treasure you choose to pursue...you
have enchanted people for centuries, and will
continue to do so.
