I'm listening to Gavriel Lipkind's Bach suites (if you have NAXOS access, go and find them right away!): his ornamentation is crazy and wild, and I love it.
My favorite until now had been, I think, Boris Pergamenschikow (also on Naxos), although I also like Anner Bylsma. (I secretly don't like Starker that much)
But I've been thinking about ornamentation a lot, and wanting to do exciting ornaments that aren't just trills, mordants, reverse mordants, appoggiaturas and turns when I play Bach, and so these came at the right time (although I didn't like his 5th suite sarabande at all: too slow and stuck!)
Ok. I can totally handle this. I swear. I can totally handle that there are people in the world who don't care for Starker's Bach. Really. I'm good. *deep breathing* At least you're not a Casals nut. Are you?
Not to say that there aren't multiple fantastic Bach recordings out there. I have to admit I'm haven't listened to Anner Bylsma's suites in a long time - although I love, love, love "Bach the Fencing Master" - and I've never heard Pergamenschikow.
Clearly it's time for me to hit up Naxos or youtube...after I finish my (enforced) quality time with Mozart and Cocteau.
